Letter from the President
Welcome to Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park! It is the largest wilderness park in Michigan’s park system and the Midwest. If you have visited the Porkies, you know it is unique and beautiful wilderness area, with plenty of space for all. Our park staff has its hands full with stewardship of this natural gem on Lake Superior. This is one of the many reasons the Friends of the Porkies was founded. Our organization does its best to promote the Porkies and provide activities for you the visitor. Starting each December we groom 30 km of cross-country ski trails in the park. We have sponsored and staffed a point-to-point cross-country ski marathon; Snowburst, our winter festival; donated money and labor to various park directed projects; highway cleanup along M107; and the PorkyFest summer festival each year. Currently, we sponsor the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival in August and have established a folk school, which will provide a unique learning experience for visitors to the Porkies.
Our main focus for 2007 will be completion of the Dan Urbanski artist in residence cabin. This unique timber framed cabin is being built by our volunteers in the Union River Gorge.
Please become a member and find out how you can participate in or contribute to any of these projects. Join the fun and become a Friend of the Porkies. Call me anytime for more information or questions you might have about our organization or Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park.
